Mourne Mountains Hike | 3 Peak Loop That Didn’t Go to Plan

What started as a perfect morning in the Mourne Mountains quickly turned into a lesson in decision-making outdoors. With a clear forecast and sunrise lighting the way, Stephen and I set out to complete a three-summit loop, ticking off some of the lesser peaks in the Mournes. After reaching our first summit, Millstone Mountain, things began to shift. The wind picked up fast, sweeping in hard off Slieve Donard, and it didn’t feel right pushing on. Summit number two was on the cards, but sometimes the mountain makes the call for you. We made the decision to play it safe, dropped Thomas’s Mountain from the route, and rerouted down onto the Granite Trail. From there, we headed for a lesser-known summit, Drinhill, where we were rewarded with incredible views before descending through Donard Forest and back to the van. Not every hike goes to plan.
