Martha Marek (1897–1938) was an Austrian murderer who killed relatives and associates to collect insurance money. After early fraud involving a maid’s suspicious injury, several people close to her—including her husband, a young relative, and her aunt—died following prolonged illnesses later identified as thallium poisoning. Marek had taken out insurance policies on each victim shortly before their deaths. Growing suspicion led to exhumations, and forensic tests confirmed poisoning. Her 1938 trial became a major Viennese sensation, revealing a pattern of calculated, financially motivated crimes.
