Matte coatings diffuse reflections and reduce glare from studio lights, which some users prefer for a less distracting viewing experience, but that diffusion can introduce a grainy, oily, hazy look that reduces contrast ratio, sharpness, and color pop. Glossy OLED monitors, by contrast, deliver superior clarity, deeper perceived blacks, higher apparent contrast, and (in my opinion) more vibrant color saturation because there is no diffusion layer softening the image, though they do show direct reflections. Now some have claimed that matte coatings have gotten better over the years, and while LG’s implementation can still appear oily and distracting, Samsung’s latest QD-OLED anti-glare coating appears to me at least, more refined and usable, though still not as punchy as glossy. So I would say there have been some improvements. Glossy OLED monitors remain the top choice for image quality, gaming immersion, and cinematic HDR performance, while matte can be preferable to some who are focused on minimizing the visibility of well defined, direct reflections.
