The four bridges in Barton-upon-Irwell, Salford. Barton Aqueduct is a pioneering engineering masterpiece, opened in 1761 to carry the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell. Designed by James Brindley, it transformed canal transport and inspired future aqueduct construction. Barton Swing Bridge was opened in 1893 and carries road traffic across the Manchester Ship Canal. Its rotating design allows large ships to pass, showcasing impressive Victorian engineering and lasting functionality. Barton Lift Bridge spans the Manchester Ship Canal and uses a vertical lifting mechanism to let ships pass beneath. It's an important example of practical industrial engineering. The M60 Barton High Level Bridge, commonly called the Barton Flyover, carries motorway traffic on the M60 over the Manchester Ship Canal. The flyover was opened in 1960 and is a vital transport link around Greater Manchester.
