Things in My Home That Would Have Been Normal in the 1940s
There are many things in my home that would have been completely unfamiliar in the 1940s — a fridge freezer, a computer, a television, even the luxury of a quiet night without sirens. But alongside those modern comforts are objects, habits, and rituals that would have felt entirely ordinary in a British home of the 1940s. In this video, I take you on a gentle tour of my home and garden, exploring items that would have had a natural place in everyday civilian life during the war years and beyond — not as curiosities, but as necessities. We’ll look at: 🕯️ A genuine late-1940s gas cooker and the labour of cooking by hand 🕯️ Bread bins, Brown Betty teapots, and the rituals that sustained morale 🕯️ Firesides, coal scuttles, and the rhythm of evenings before television 🕯️ Dolly tubs, garden beds, and the hard, visible work of domestic life 🕯️ Pigeons, patchwork, jewellery, and the quiet persistence of beauty My love for this period began with its aesthetic — the furniture, the clothing, the crackle of a gramophone — but it deepened into an admiration for the resilience, ingenuity, and pride people took in their homes, even during unimaginable challenges. These objects aren’t displayed here as artefacts. They are used, worn, mended, and cherished — just as they once were. My home isn’t a museum or a living history set. It’s a sanctuary for voices of the past that still have something to teach us about care, patience, and building things to last.
