Half of all people over 80 suffer from Alzheimer's or some form of dementia. Alzheimer's is a disease that affects the brain of the patient and the hearts of their caregivers and family members. Early diagnosis methods are now available, which can delay and modulate the disease. He is a Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is also a Professor at the University Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Oral Implantology (UIRMI) and a scientist at the Biomedical Research Center Networking in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN). He was recently appointed Associate Principal Investigator at the Singapore Eye Research Institute, The Academia, 20 College Road, Discovery Tower, Singapore. He has authored 300 international scientific articles, 70 national articles, delivered 500 lectures, and has an H-index of 66 and over 17,100 citations. He currently ranks among the top 1% of scientists in the country according to the H-index. He is also the founder of Geroa Diagnostics, the first company to offer a saliva-based biomarker for Alzheimer's diagnosis.
