88 Contra 2.000: La Batalla de 24 Horas que la CIA Nunca Pudo Ganar

November 10, 1975. Quifangondo. A few kilometers from Luanda. Less than 24 hours remain until Angola's independence. A column of more than 2,000 men—FNLA, Zairian commandos, South African artillery—advances along a narrow road beside the Bengo River. Their objective: to take Luanda before midnight. On the other side, waiting for them, are barely 1,000 men. And among them, 88 Cuban artillerymen who arrived in Angola less than three weeks ago, with a weapon that no one in the world had yet used in actual combat: the BM-21 Grad rocket launcher. The CIA, in Langley, had already prepared the victory celebration. Wine, cheese, crepe paper decorations for November 11. There was no celebration. 2,000 rockets rained down on the FNLA column in a matter of minutes. A Zairian cannon exploded on its first shot due to a maintenance error. South African artillery lacked the range to respond. By midday, the attacking force had been completely destroyed. That night, Agostinho Neto proclaimed Angola's independence. The FNLA never recovered. This is the full story of the battle that the locals called Nshila wa Lufu—the Road of Death. The battle that decided, 24 hours before the world knew, what kind of country Angola would become. ⏱️ CONTENTS 00:00 — Quifangondo. 24 hours before independence. 02:30 — Why Angola had three rival movements at war 05:00 — The FNLA, Zaire, South Africa, and the CIA prepare the final offensive 07:30 — The 88 Cubans and the weapon no one had tested in combat 10:00 — The CIA celebrates victory before it even happens 12:30 — The column advances along the narrow road beside the Bengo River 15:00 — The first shot fired by the Cuban Grads 17:30 — The Zairean cannon that exploded by mistake 20:00 — The total collapse of the attacking column 22:30 — The retreat to Ambriz and the end of the FNLA as a threat 25:00 — Midnight: Neto proclaims Angola's independence 27:00 — Why this battle changed the course of three decades of African history 📌 SOURCES AND REFERENCES — Battle of Quifangondo — Wikipedia, records Operational and cited sources. — Grokipedia — Battle of Quifangondo, detailed analysis of the engagement. — Qualla — Battle of Quifangondo, narrative account with sources from Stockwell. — Stockwell, John.
