La Trampa Aérea de Cuba: Cómo los Pilotos de Fidel Ganaron el Cielo de Angola

November 1987. Angola. The South African Army has just destroyed four Angolan brigades in 72 hours. 61 Soviet tanks ablaze. More than 1,000 dead. Cuito Cuanavale is on the verge of falling. And then Fidel Castro makes a decision that no one in Pretoria had anticipated. 50,000 soldiers. The best MiG-23 pilots. A strategy designed not to defend Cuito Cuanavale, but to force South Africa to withdraw from Angola for good. The South African 61st Mechanized Battalion—the same one that had just destroyed four Angolan brigades—received an unprecedented order: cease all movement during daylight hours. The MiG-23s from El Guajiro had arrived. In the following months, eight Cuban T-55s stopped forty Olifant tanks. The MiG-23s flew 1,283 missions over Cuito Cuanavale. And on June 27, 1988, Cuban planes attacked South African positions 11 kilometers from the Namibian border. The CIA documented it: Cuba had achieved air superiority over southern Angola and northern Namibia. South Africa went to negotiate. Namibia became independent. Apartheid ended. Nelson Mandela was free. And it all began with the Cuban pilots who landed in Menongue in November 1987. ⏱️ CONTENTS 00:00 — The Battle of the Lomba River. November 1987.
