RORION GRACIE - PURE CONNECTION #0080 Rorion Gracie holds a law degree and has resided in the United States since the 1970s, where he initially taught Jiu-Jitsu in his garage. He was the founder and owner of the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California. At that time, Rorion began several attempts to popularize Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the United States. Rorion began associating with Hollywood figures and choreographed the 1987 film Lethal Weapon, where the protagonist, played by Mel Gibson, applies a triangle choke to a villain at the end of the film. In Lethal Weapon 3, Rorion appears as a henchman in a non-speaking role. Between 1989 and 1992, he produced a documentary about the Gracie art of fighting Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie in Action. Many of the videos showed the Gracies and their students defeating fighters from other martial arts. Rorion became interested in organizing an event that would promote Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and prove its effectiveness by defeating larger opponents from other, more famous martial arts. This led Rorion to found the "War of the Worlds" project and contact the pay-per-view company Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG). "War of the Worlds" soon became The Ultimate Fighting Championship (later renamed UFC 1). Rorion's younger brother, Royce Gracie, was chosen to represent the family's Jiu-Jitsu. With Royce's success, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu exploded in popularity and eventually gave rise to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Rorion left the organization after the UFC.
