In 1942 the construction of the famous Alaska Highway faced extreme subarctic conditions. At Milepost 256 Sergeant Frank Miller had to leave his Caterpillar D8-1H bulldozer behind in a freezing muskeg swamp at minus sixty degrees Fahrenheit. It sat there for two hundred seventy-three days completely frozen. This is the incredible historical story of how a small recovery team went back in September 1943 to thaw and start this seventeen ton steel monster on the very first try.
