#EnVivoAhora | Masiosare: Benito Juárez en la SCJN (29/agosto/2025)

Today is Friday's History and Humanities Roundtable at Masiosare, and tonight we'll be discussing "Benito Juárez at the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation." Benito Juárez began his academic training in 1821, studying Latin, moral theology, and philosophy at the seminary in Oaxaca. Six years later, in 1827, he entered the Institute of Sciences and Arts of Oaxaca to study jurisprudence, completing his studies in 1831. That same year, he began working in the law office of Licenciado Tiburcio Cañas and was elected councilman of the Oaxaca City Council, thus marking the beginning of a public career linked to justice. In 1841, he was appointed Judge of First Instance for Civil and Treasury Matters in the city of Oaxaca. Subsequently, between 1844 and 1845, he served in the Prosecutor's Office of the Superior Court of Justice, and in 1846, he assumed the presidency of the Court of Justice of Oaxaca. During the war with the United States, in 1847 and 1848, he served as interim governor of Oaxaca, demonstrating leadership amidst a national crisis. His academic vocation also became evident in 1852, when he was appointed rector of the Institute of Sciences and Arts of Oaxaca, in addition to teaching civil law. However, in 1853 he was exiled by order of Santa Anna, living first in San Juan de Ulúa, then in Havana, and finally in New Orleans, until his return after the triumph of the Revolution of Ayutla in 1855. That same year, as Minister of Justice in the interim government of Juan Álvarez, he drafted the Juárez Law, limiting ecclesiastical and military privileges to promote legal equality in Mexican society. The 1857 Constitution placed him in a pivotal role: he was elected President of the Supreme Court of Justice, a position he assumed on December 1st, although he soon requested a leave of absence to serve as Secretary of the Interior. His refusal to support the Plan of Tacubaya led to his imprisonment on December 17th. In 1858, following the resignation of Ignacio Comonfort, Juárez legitimately assumed the presidency of the Republic based on Article 79 of the Constitution, leading the liberals in the War of Reform. Finally, in 1860, he was elected President of Mexico, from where he defended the Republic against the French intervention and the empire of Maximilian. Masiosare is the public media analysis program, a co-production of Canal Once and Canal 22. Second season.
