[Anchor] The Bank of Korea will hold a Monetary Policy Committee meeting tomorrow (the 16th) to decide on the base interest rate. While an interest rate hike has effectively been foreshadowed since last May, market attention is focused more on the speed and magnitude of the hike in the second half of the year rather than the decision itself. Reporter Kim Soo-bin reports. [Reporter] Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song assessed that all necessary conditions for an interest rate hike have been met. Following his remarks last May, he reaffirmed the same stance in his recent report to the National Assembly. [Shin Hyun-song / Governor of the Bank of Korea (the 9th)] “Considering inflation exceeding the target level, improved growth, and increased financial stability risks, I judge that it is necessary to raise the base interest rate at an appropriate time.” The market is placing weight on the possibility that this Monetary Policy Committee will raise the base rate by 0.25 percentage points. Some are even discussing the possibility of a unanimous decision, where all members agree to the hike. If the hike actually takes place, it will mark the first interest rate hike in three years and six months since January 2023. With growth momentum strengthening due to the semiconductor boom, the likelihood of the annual growth rate exceeding the existing forecast of 2.6% has increased. However, consumer price inflation has recorded the 3% range for two consecutive months, and high exchange rates, housing prices in the metropolitan area, and rising household debt are factors making it difficult to keep interest rates capped. If this hike was effectively a foregone conclusion, the market is now focusing on the next move. It is expected that the outcome of consecutive hikes next month will be gauged based on the dot plot outlining interest rate forecasts and the tone of Governor Shin's remarks. However, interest rate hikes immediately translate into interest bills for borrowers. It is estimated that a 0.25 percentage point increase in mortgage interest rates will raise the annual interest burden by an average of approximately 300,000 won per borrower. Ultimately, determining the pace at which to raise rates while minimizing side effects is expected to remain a challenge for monetary policy in the second half of the year.
