My Fig Tree Looked Dead... But It Wasn't

Every summer, I start getting messages from fig growers asking the same question: "Why is my fig tree losing all of its leaves?" If you're growing figs in the Deep South or other hot, humid climates, there's a good chance you're dealing with fig rust. The good news? It doesn't necessarily mean your tree is dying. In this video, I walk through our fig orchard and show you three real examples: 🌳 A Peter's Honey fig tree that lost nearly every leaf. 🌳 A Mary Lane fig tree that naturally started recovering on its own. 🌳 A Tena fig tree that completely stalled until we tried something most people say you should never do—summer pruning. I'll explain what fig rust is, why it's so common in our climate, what our expectations are when growing hundreds of fig trees, and how we decide when to simply let a tree recover versus when to step in and help it along.
