Topping vs Pinching Fig Trees: One Month Later

Today on MyFigStix, we're checking in on my fig tree topping vs pinching experiment—and the results are getting interesting! Less than a month ago, I topped one of my I-258 fig trees by removing the top two nodes. About a week later, I learned from Paul that simply pinching the apical bud can create a completely different growth habit. According to him, pinching tends to produce a crowned appearance, while topping often creates a more tiered structure. So naturally, I had to test it! I pinched two additional I-258 branches and now, just a few weeks later, we're taking a look at the growth and comparing the results side-by-side. In this video we'll discuss: 🌳 Topping vs Pinching 🌳 Crowned vs Tiered Tree Structure 🌳 New Growth Development 🌳 Why Some Pinches Work Better Than Others 🌳 My Philosophy on Pruning and Tree Training One thing I've learned through growing fig trees is that pruning isn't just about controlling size—it's about directing growth and creating the structure you want. There isn't one perfect shape for every fig tree. The best shape is the one that works for your goals and growing style. As I always say, there is no right way or wrong way—there is only YOUR way. If you're growing fig trees, training young trees, or experimenting with pruning techniques, I'd love to hear what has worked best for you.
