A new widespread power outage, the third in the last six months, affected Cuba on Monday, the electricity company reported, amid an energy crisis exacerbated by the US oil embargo. The state-owned Cuban Electric Union (UNE) indicated on the news channel X that the causes of the "total disconnection" of the system, which affects the entire island of 9.6 million inhabitants, are being investigated. The aging electrical system, coupled with the oil embargo imposed on the island by the United States since January, means that Cubans face daily 24-hour blackouts in the capital. In the interior of the island, outages can exceed 70 hours. Cuba, mired in a severe economic crisis with shortages of food and medicine and rampant inflation, suffers from frequent partial blackouts.
