Japanese Prints - Shin Hanga - artelino
Shin Hanga means literally "new prints" and describs a movement of Japanese woodblock printmaking at the beginning of the 20th century until after World War II. Its mentor was the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. Shin Hanga was the continuation of the traditional ukiyo-e as a cooperative work of a designer (the artist), a carver, a printer and the publisher. Shin Hanga prints were usually produced with an utmost technical skill level. Most Shin Hanga prints were exported - mainly to the USA. Critics say that shin hanga catered too much for Western tastes and showed a romantic Japan that did not exist any longer. Today shin hanga prints are highly appreciated by collectors.
