This episode explores reasons why gay men can be critical and even cruel to other gay men. Growing up gay isn't easy. As gay men we have challenges that straight men do not. Most of us realized we were different in childhood…and we experienced rejection and other social challenges very early because of this. Society is structured to accommodate the straight experience and groom us towards the norms of heterosexual culture. Many gay men felt like they didn't belong as little boys in their church, school, and often their own family. Some of us were targets for bullies growing up. Being gay was considered a crime and a mental illness. We were denied basic rights to housing and employment that were afforded to our straight counterparts. The lack of support and rejection started in our own homes at the hands of those who should be protecting us. Gay men often experience rejection and isolation, even from their own families and communities. Gay men have higher rates of substance abuse, suicide, body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and other mental disorders.
