Contemporary human projects are incompatible with our current school practices; they lack a new ethical system and a clear axiological framework based on knowing how to care and coexist. They require us to abandon stereotypes and prejudices, demanding that we transform an obsolete school into one that gives everyone the opportunity to be and to learn. It is urgent to humanize education, to conceive new social constructions of learning in which integral education is realized. It is urgent to establish learning networks that promote sustainable human development. Maturana tells us that education happens in coexistence, reciprocally among those who coexist. If modernity tends to lead us towards an individualistic ethic, it will never be too much to speak of coexistence, dialogue, and participation as conditions for learning. It will be opportune to speak of... learning communities. [The author is a Master in Educational Sciences from the University of Porto and founder of the "Ecola da Ponte" in Portugal, a world reference in pedagogical innovation.] He is the driving force behind over 100 projects for a new education in Brazil and a collaborator on the Âncora Project, following the same model as the Escola da Ponte.
