giovinezza - anthem of the rsi (1943 version)/translation and historical context
_____________________________________________________________________ "Giovinezza" (Italian: "Youth") is one of the most well-known songs of the Italian Fascist movement. During the existence of the Italian Social Republic (1943–1945), it served—alongside "Il Canto degli Italiani"—as one of the de facto national anthems. The version performed during this period was based on the 1918 arrangement by Giuseppe Blanc and Marcello Manni, which was later adapted by the Fascist movement. _____________________________________________________________________ The Italian Social Republic (Italian: *Repubblica Sociale Italiana*) was a state that existed in Northern Italy from September 23, 1943, to April 25, 1945, following the Kingdom of Italy's surrender to the Allies. Benito Mussolini, who had been liberated by German forces during Operation Eiche (Operation Oak), became the head of state. Despite having its own governing bodies, the republic remained heavily dependent on Germany politically and militarily. On November 14–15, 1943, the Republican Fascist Party held the Verona Congress, where the Verona Manifesto was adopted. The manifesto proclaimed an aim to restore the fascist movement's original revolutionary and corporatist ideals, including plans for the socialization of certain economic sectors. As Allied forces advanced and the Italian Resistance gained strength, the republic's government saw its capabilities gradually diminish while its dependence on Germany increased. On April 25, 1945, the republic's leadership began evacuating; by April 28, Benito Mussolini had been captured and executed by Italian partisans. The fall of the Italian Social Republic marked the end of the fascist regime in Italy. _____________________________________________________________________ Audio status: Date of recording: ?
