el generalísimo - francoist regime song/translation and historical context
_____________________________________________________________________ "Generalissimo" (Spanish: *El Generalísimo*) is a song of the Francoist regime in Spain. Dedicated to Francisco Franco, the composition portrays him as the national leader and a symbol of the Spanish state during the era of autocracy. _____________________________________________________________________ The Spanish State (Spanish: *Estado Español*) was the political regime that existed in Spain from the end of the Civil War in 1939 until the transition to democracy following the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. In 1947, the Law of Succession to the Headship of the State was adopted; under this law, Spain formally reverted to a monarchical form of government, yet Franco retained power as both head of state and regent. The regime emerged during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), fought between the Republican and Nationalist camps. The Republican side comprised diverse forces, ranging from socialists and communists to liberals and anarchists. The Nationalist camp united the military, monarchists, traditionalists, and Falangists. On October 1, 1936, Francisco Franco was proclaimed head of the government of Nationalist Spain, and following the Nationalist victory on April 1, 1939, he established an authoritarian regime. During the state's early years, the Spanish Falange party exerted significant influence; however, the role of Falangist ideology gradually diminished after World War II. Ideologically, the regime was grounded in authoritarian national-conservatism, Catholicism, and anti-communism. Throughout the 1940s, Spain maintained neutrality in World War II, although the regime supported the Axis powers politically and ideologically. In 1942, a series of state-led economic development programs aimed at industrial growth was launched. The 1950s saw the beginning of economic modernization and Spain's gradual integration into the international system. In 1957, with French support, Spain concluded the Ifni War against armed groups in the Spanish Sahara region. Francisco Franco died on November 20, 1975. Following this, King Juan Carlos I initiated a process of political reforms that led to Spain's transition to a democratic system. _____________________________________________________________________ Audio status: Date of recording: ? ¡Franco, Franco, Franco! Español providencial. ____________________________________________________________________
