In April, ornamental shrubs are the first to create volume and vibrant splashes of color in the garden, often blooming before the foliage appears. April's Top Favorites Forsythia: The most recognizable shrub of April, which transforms into a "golden ball." Its branches are densely covered with bright yellow bell-shaped flowers before the leaves emerge. Magnolia (Star Magnolia and Soulangeana): A truly exotic spring garden. In mid- to late April, large white, pink, or purple flowers, resembling lilies, open on bare branches. Daphne (Daphne): A low shrub literally covered in pink-purple flowers with a very strong, pleasant aroma in April. Important: The berries of this plant are poisonous. Low Almond (Laburnum): In mid-April, it is covered in a cloud of delicate pink small flowers. Very hardy and spectacular when planted alone. For a bright accent: Forsythia will create the most noticeable yellow spot, visible from afar.
