After our Great Divide Trail thru it was nice to do something a bit easier, and in turn I feel I have found the best beginner thru hike anyone could ever do. If you have aspirations of hiking the Appalachian Trail and want to train, learn, or test new gear.... there is no better hike for it than the SHT! With simple navigation the entire way, designated campsites complete with latrines every few miles, plentiful water sources, towns not too far apart, and a great community surrounding this hike... it really is as good as it gets. The SHT happens to also coincide with the much larger North Country Trail, a 4,800 mile thru hike spanning from Vermont all the way to North Dakota.
