西村 朗：キールティムカ／Akira Nishimura: Kirtimukha

■西村 朗：キールティムカ　ユーフォニアムとマリンバのための 演奏：外囿祥一郎（euph）、西久保友広（mari） 演奏所要時間：約15分 2022年12月9日、東京文化会館　小ホール 四人組とその仲間たち・その28　現代室内楽の夕べ（主催：全音楽譜出版社） 世界的なユーフォニアム奏者である外囿祥一郎さんから、ユーフォニアムとマリンバのための二重奏曲の作曲をすすめられ、その新作を全音の四人組コンサートで初演するというご提案をいただいた。マリンバは外囿さんとのユニットでもご活躍の名手の西久保友広さんがお引き受けくださるとのこと。 大変興味深いお話であり、ご提案を受けて作曲を試みることにした。 作曲にあたっては、ユーフォニアムとマリンバの出会いによるグッと前向きの表現パワーの増大を思い、ちょっと風変わりなテーマだが、以前から温めていた強烈なある「顔」に対する賛歌にしようと考えた。 キールティムカの顔。 キールティムカは、顔と手だけの聖獣像。ヒンズー教の寺院などの門の上に鎮座している。その顔の睨みで外敵邪気を払う。 当然ながら、その物凄い顔にコロナ・マスクの着用は無い。 ユーフォニアムが奏するのは、牙の生えた大きな口が発する邪気払いの呪文。そして、貪り食べ飲む快感の喜悦と興奮の叫び。キールティムカは、蛇をも齧り食べ、なんと、かつて自らの体も食べてしまったと伝えられる。 そして猛烈な鼻息と深い呼吸の揺動。　 一方、マリンバは大きく見開かれた両目とその眼光。頭の尖ったツノ。顔のゴツい骨格。堅牢な上下歯が打ち合わされてリズミックに時間をも噛み砕く響きと共に、味覚、臭覚、聴覚反応なども表現する。　　 以前から、「顔」のある音楽を書きたいと思うことはあった。 が、今回はさらに思い切って「顔」そのものが音楽であるような、そんな作曲を試みようとした。一種の諧謔性を伴った内容と言える。（西村 朗） 映像・音響・配信：YouClassics 協力：株式会社ぶらあぼホールディングス 楽譜：http://shop.zen-on.co.jp/p/590239?utm... ■Akira Nishimura: Kirtimukha for Euphonium and Marimba Performed by Shoichiro Hokazono（euph）, Tomohiro Nishikubo（mari）Duration: ca. 15 minutes 9th December 2022 at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Receital Hall (Tokyo) Groupe des Quatre et ses ami(e)s: 28ème cycle (Produced by Zen-On Music Co., Ltd.) The internationally renowned euphonium player Shōichirō Hokazono suggested that I write a duo for euphonium and marimba with the idea that it would be premiered at a Zen-On Groupe des Quatre concert. Apparently Tomohiro Nishikubo, who is a member of Hokazono’s group, would agree to take on the marimba part. This was an intriguing prospect as far as I was concerned. I accepted the proposal and set to work. Thinking about how to increase the positive expressive power that would result from the encounter between the euphonium and the marimba, I came up with the somewhat unusual idea of working on an idea I’d had for some time of eulogising a powerful face, namely that of Kirtimukha, the fierce monster portrayed in the form of face and hands only who in Hindu iconography is frequently depicted above the gate of a Hindu temple with the aim of frightening away evil spirits and malevolent influences. Needless to say, the fearsome face of Kirtimukha is not covered by a Covid mask! The euphonium is entrusted with the exorcistic spells that issue forth from the monster’s gaping mouth with its enormous fangs. The monster yells ecstatically as it indulges voraciously in food and drink. Kirtimukha even devours snakes and is said to have eaten its own body. It sways from side to side with violent nasal breaths and deep breathing. In contrast, the marimba evokes Kirtimukha’s wide-open eyes and the light that emanates from them. Kirtimukha is further distinguished by the pointed horns on its head, the massive bone structure of its face, and the way in which its sturdy upper and lower teeth rhythmically clack against each other as the monster devours time itself in an expression of taste, smell and aural response. I’ve felt for some time that I’d like to write music with a face. But in this case I’ve attempted to go a step further by creating a piece with a certain comical character in which the face itself constitutes the music.
