The village of Immerath near Erkelenz on the Lower Rhine. A ghost village. We are here in the very west of Germany, between Mönchengladbach, Cologne and Aachen. Immerath is located in the Rhenish lignite mining area. Here are the big holes from which the coal is pulled out of the ground in opencast mines. Everything that stands in the way is dredged away for opencast mining. Whole villages too. Immerath is one of these villages. The inhabitants have been resettled, the houses are being demolished. On this, probably last, visit to Immerath, I see the surviving remains of a once pretty village.
