Barkas B1100 - Versteckt vor der Verschrottung. Die Prototypen der DDR.

#barkas #gdr #prototype In this documentary, we trace the story of the mysterious Barkas B1100 – a vehicle intended to secure the future of East German commercial vehicle manufacturing. Engineers in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) developed new chassis concepts, experimented with various engines, and tried to catch up with international standards. But the story of the B1100 is not just a story of technical innovation. It is also a story of secrecy, improvisation, and courage. When the future of the project became uncertain, the prototypes disappeared from the factory. They were moved from place to place, hidden in barns, and protected from prying eyes. Some of these vehicles were actually slated for destruction. That any examples still exist today is thanks to people who recognized the historical value of these vehicles and took personal responsibility. Together with eyewitness Enrico Martin, we follow the trail of these extraordinary vehicles. We visit former hiding places of the prototypes in Irbersdorf, Langenstriegis, and Dittersbach, take a detailed look at the technology and development history, and discuss why the Barkas successor ultimately never went into series production. We also learn how Barkas analyzed comparable Western vehicles, what technical improvements were planned, and why even the most modern prototypes would have had little chance on the international market after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This documentary tells the story of a vehicle that was almost forgotten—and of the people who ensured that a piece of East German automotive history has been preserved to this day. Enjoy watching!
