Samsung is pushing ahead with the construction of a fabrication plant (fab), a full-scale memory semiconductor production facility, in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions. Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended the "National Briefing on the Three Major Mega Projects for Korea's Great Leap Forward," presided over by President Lee Jae-myung at the Blue House today (the 29th), and announced plans to establish a memory fabrication plant in the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Chairman Lee began by stating that the technological paradigm is shifting at an unimaginable speed due to AI, explaining, "The market view is that despite active investment by semiconductor companies, current resources are insufficient to meet explosive demand." He then mentioned Gwangju, a city brought up by President Lee Jae-myung, noting that investment schedules for the Yongin National Industrial Complex have been significantly accelerated following those in Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek, thus bringing forward the timeline for preparing a new complex. He added that investments for Samsung Group's internal AI data centers (DC) and humanoid robots would be centered in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, while investments for Samsung SDI's solid-state batteries and batteries for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) would focus on South Gyeongsang Province and Ulsan. There are plans to continue investing in the next-generation shipbuilding industry in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province. Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to expand investment in state-of-the-art packaging substrates for servers and electric vehicles, centering on its Busan plant, while concentrating investment in the strategic bio industry will be concentrated in Songdo, Incheon. Chairman Lee also announced plans to develop Songdo into the world's largest bio complex. Chairman Lee concluded by saying, "I am convinced that if companies, the government, and local governments join forces, we can build an irreplaceable Korea," adding, "I consider it an honor to have contributed to this as a business leader."
