Spring 1917. The United States entered the war, and combat in the skies took a decisive turn. The Germans changed tactics: they now flew in squadrons, marking the end of the solo flights and aerial duels that had forged Guynemer's legend. It was no longer uncommon to see clashes of up to 100 planes at the same time. When they returned from the front and found themselves in Paris, Berlin, or London, these heroes of the air were welcomed as true stars. However, this press-maintained stardom deeply irritated the soldiers in the trenches: they too lived under constant danger, they too had their heroes, but no one spoke of them. In September 1917, Guynemer was shot down. His comrade René Fonck set out to avenge him, racking up victory after victory until he became the new "Ace of Aces," celebrated even by Clemenceau. On the other side, the legendary Red Baron, Von Richthofen, suffered the same fate, a crushing blow to German morale. By the end of the Great War, several thousand pilots had lost their lives. But by pushing their planes—and themselves—to the limit, they paved the way for a new era for the aviation industry.
