Beginner’s Guide to Prayer “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” ― Augustine of Hippo, Confessions Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4v8 1. We need God because we came from God. (Genesis 1v11; Genesis 1v20; Genesis 1v26 God is still God without man, but man is dead without God. 2. God loves us and wants a relationship with us. (Psalm 149v4; Zephaniah 3v17; John 3v16; 1 John 4v19) 3. Our Intimacy with God flows from our identity in Christ. Christians are children of God (John 1v12) Christians are friends of God (John 15v13-15) Christians are the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5v25-27). Revelation, not desperation, is the foundation of true prayer. Don’t pray like a widow, pray like a bride (Luke 18v1-8) 4. We pray TO the Father, THROUGH the Son, and BY the Spirit! To the Father: “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” John 15v16 In the Name of Jesus: “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14v13-14 Through the Spirit: “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Galatians 4v6 “Likewise the Spirit also helps us in our weaknesses.
