Witnesses to history and instrumental in the development of an entire region, they were used for centuries, when water was the main energy source for making flour, oil, paper, and even sawing wood. Today, enthusiasts are showcasing these charming and nostalgic mills and introducing us to their architectural and industrial heritage. "You Are Here" takes you to visit the small Rochereuil mill, built in the 12th century, where Thierry Mezurat, a nut farmer, presses walnut oil in the traditional manner every winter. A proponent of sustainable and local agriculture, Thierry is restoring the mill's reputation, as well as that of walnuts, which have been present in the Périgord region for 17,000 years. A few kilometers downstream, the majestic Moulin de la Pauze, whose origins date back to the 9th century, is a new dimension. Transformed into an eco-museum, the owner, Alain Mazeau, heir to a long line of millers, shares with visitors the secrets of making flour and good bread, as well as electricity. Energy-independent, the Moulin de la Pauze transforms the river's power and provides electricity to the village. For these enthusiasts, the mills of the Périgord, less well-known than the castles and abbeys, deserve to be restored to their rightful place. They can then become the future players in a new, local and sustainable economy and rediscover their former charm and usefulness.
