Analysis Of Triceps Exercises: Close Grip Bench Press/EZ Bar "Skull" Crusher With #Dougbrignole

The Triceps is the “antagonist” to the Biceps. It is the muscle that operates (moves) the elbow in the opposite direction, to that of the Biceps. It extends the elbow, primarily. This means it “increases the angle” of the elbow joint - moving the elbow from the bent position, to the straight arm position. It is a single muscle, with one single insertion, but with three “heads”. Each of these heads has a separate origin. For this reason, some people mistakenly believe it’s possible to preferentially emphasize one part of the Triceps, more than another part of it. However, that is not possible - despite what you may have heard. Since the elbow is essentially a “hinge” joint (it only extends in one direction), and there is only one tendon that causes that action, the entire Triceps (all three heads) have to participate equally in that action. There would have to be three separate insertions, each able to pull in a slightly different direction, and a joint that moves in multiple directions (like a ball-and-socket, rather than a hinge), for the heads to work separately. Increasing the stretch of the Long Head (as happens in the stretch position of an overhead Triceps exercises), does not cause that particular head to grow any more than the other two heads.
