Off-Track Hiking Tasmania's Remote Mountains || The Frankland Range
I spent 8 days solo hiking through one of Tasmania’s most remote and unforgiving mountain ranges - the Frankland Range. Tucked deep in Southwest Tasmania, this brutal off-track hike is rarely attempted. There are no trails, no markers, and barely any information - just dense scrub, jagged ridgelines, and relentless weather. Navigation is incredibly difficult, with constant pathfinding challenges that demand experience and full focus. Most days, I had less than 20 metres of visibility, making route-finding across exposed ridgelines extremely dangerous. Over the course of the trek, I faced -10°C winds, sideways rain, blistering heat, and even water shortages. The final stretch turned into a day-long, knee-deep slog along the marshy edges of Lake Pedder. But when the skies finally cleared, the views were absolutely spectacular - a hard-earned payoff for all of the discomfort nature had thrown my way. By far, the most humbling and rewarding hike I’ve ever done.
