ENTENDIENDO AL GÉNERO

In 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. Thirty-six years later, we're still fighting practically the same battle, just with a different word. In this episode, I start with my own earliest childhood memory—a towel on my head, a Daniela Romo song, and my mother's face—to dismantle, with names, years, and sources for each piece of information, the origins of the term "gender ideology": from the 1995 Beijing Conference to Dale O'Leary's 1997 book, including the actual science behind biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression. I carefully explain the difference between transgender and transsexual, between gender incongruence and gender dysphoria, and how the international medical protocol that regulates any transition process, the WPATH SOC8, actually works. And I analyze the case of the documentary about trans children in Colombia, whose director is currently facing an arrest warrant in Cali for contempt of court. I close with the argument that, for me, resolves any discussion about proportions: trans people represent between 0.3% and 0.5% of the world's population. The disproportionate amount of political noise surrounding them is no coincidence. This isn't an episode for you to choose a side.
