Since the first discovery of planets outside the solar system in 1995, more than 5,000 exoplanets have been identified. And as astronomers begin to use space telescopes to analyze the chemical composition of some exoplanets' atmospheres and search for signs of life, it's becoming increasingly clear how unique our planet is. A planet's ability to develop and support life is called habitability. The science of stars and planets can explain how many seemingly random events had to come together for a planet like Earth to form. Courtesy of LMU Munich.
