About Gu Shengying 顾圣婴 (1937–1967): Gu Shengying was a renowned Chinese pianist. She was born on July 2, 1937, in Shanghai. At the age of 16, she debuted on stage, performing with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to great acclaim. By 18, she was already the orchestra’s principal soloist and held her first solo concert In 1957, she participated in the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow, where she was awarded the Gold Medal in the piano competition.She also competed in the 1955 Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and later took part in the 1958 International Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow), where she gained wide acclaim despite not receiving a prize. During the Cultural Revolution, she was severely persecuted. On January 31, 1967, she committed suicide along with her mother and younger brother — she was only 29 years old. 🎼 CD 1 1.
