Historical Significance • Ancient Origins: The procession was first initiated during the peak of the Kotte Kingdom, when the capital housed the Sacred Tooth Relic. This era is considered a golden age for Sinhala literature and culture. • A Temporary Halt and Revival: Following the collapse of the Kotte Kingdom and the arrival of the Portuguese, the procession ceased for a significant period. It was eventually revived in 1901 by Ven.
