Building China’s Megacity, Chongqing (含中文字幕)

Boasting epic megacities such Shenzhen and Shanghai, or Xian and Beijing, China is a country famed for its rapid development and impressive architecture, both modern and ancient alike. Yet few outsiders have ever heard of its Western megacity, Chongqing, a metropolis that has quite literally exploded upwards in recent years. Across the city, skyscrapers tickle the heavens and the skyline is dominated by both funky architectural creations and practical pieces of infrastructure alike. Impressed as I was by Chongqing’s epic buildings, after speaking to a number of residents I discovered that the city is brimming with life from top to bottom and it is worth exploring some of the overlooked parts of the city. In the back alleys and dark corners, I discovered a number of hidden architectural gems and met a whole host of colourful characters, who taught me to look beyond the obvious. This film is a celebration of the many faces, both human and structural, of this great Chinese megacity and takes a look at how this architectural miracle came to be.
