A Dance Older Than Memory 🪶 | Apache Crown Dancers
Ya'at'eeh! Aaron Tsosie here, the person behind the camera! 🪶 Welcome back to the Standing Horse Route 66 Pow Wow! One of the moments I look forward to every year is the special performance by the Cibecue Apache Crown Dancers. A huge thank you to the dancers, singers, and everyone who made the trip to Winslow, Arizona to share this beautiful tradition with all of us. Last year's Apache Crown Dance video, titled "They Danced Like Spirits From the Mountains," has reached over 90,000 views on YouTube. I never expected so many people from around the world to watch and appreciate this special performance. My hope is that videos like these encourage people to learn more about Apache culture while also helping preserve these memories for future generations. For many Apache people, the Crown Dancers—often known as Mountain Spirit Dancers—represent sacred mountain spirits who bring prayers, healing, blessings, protection, and guidance to the community. Their songs, dances, and ceremonies carry deep cultural and spiritual meaning. While not every teaching is meant to be shared publicly, it is always an honor to witness these performances when communities choose to invite the public to experience them. As soon as dinner break arrived on Saturday, I knew exactly where I wanted to be. After waiting an entire year to see them again, I was excited to set up my cameras and document another incredible performance. Every year feels a little different, but seeing the Crown Dancers return to Standing Horse has become one of my favorite traditions. To the Cibecue Apache Crown Dancers, thank you once again for sharing your songs, your dances, and your traditions with everyone in attendance. I truly hope this video reaches people who have never experienced an Apache Crown Dance before and inspires them to learn more about the rich cultures of Indigenous peoples throughout the Southwest. Ahe'hee' for watching, and thank you for supporting Indigenous Event Recordings. 🪶 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📢 Support My Work 🎯 Help me keep documenting Indigenous events — send a tip via Venmo: @imaarontoasty 💌 Want to support long-term?
