Some cars no longer have this selection, but most do. In short (since a mechanical lock inhibits the transmission in the Park position), to perform the maneuver as correctly as possible, it's best to select neutral (N) and apply the handbrake. Take your foot off the brake, letting the car "rest" on the handbrake, and then select "P."
