George Adamson Commemoration video

25th April 2022 marked the centenary of the death of Brigadier Gen. George Adamson, who was shot in Athlone. Adamson had been active in the Irish Volunteers, he served in WWI and in 1920 he joined the Athlone Brigade of the IRA. Adamson took part in the Parkwood ambush of 22 October 1920 near Moate, and the Cornafulla ambush of 2 February 1921, near Athlone. In February 1921 Adamson succeeded James Tormey as second-in-command of the Athlone Brigade. He was present at the handover of Victoria Barracks and Athlone Castle as the British withdrew from the town following the ratification of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the following month he became Brigadier General of the Athlone Brigade. The exact circumstances which led to his death in April 1922 are unclear. On Sunday 24th April 2022 a commemorative ceremony for Brigadier Gen. George Adamson was held in Holy Trinity Graveyard, Mount Temple, Co. Westmeath. The prayer service was led by Reverend Father Jimmy Murray (4:20). The life of Brigadier Gen. George Adamson was remembered in a speech by Historian John Cunningham, a great grandnephew of Adamson (7:05). The Roll of honour was read by Phil Tompkins biographer and grandnephew of Adamson (18:27) Military Salute was performed by members of the 6th Battalion Custume Barracks, with the last post and the National Anthem played by members of the Army Band No.2 Brigade, Athlone The event was filmed thanks to support from the Decade of Centenaries Programme, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
