Hawaii Sports 2Night: John Veneri
KHON2’s own John Veneri joins the latest episode of Hawaiʻi Sports 2night, available Sunday at 7 p.m. on the KHON+ app on Apple TV, Roku and Firestick. Episodes are also available on demand following the premiere, with a rebroadcast airing Mondays at 10:35 p.m. on KHON2. Veneri — a former University of Hawaiʻi football player, longtime UH football radio broadcaster and former KHON2 sports anchor and reporter — reflects on his journey from the football field to becoming one of Hawaiʻi television’s most recognizable personalities. During the conversation, Veneri discusses what it meant to wear the green and white for the Rainbow Warriors and how his playing days helped shape the path he would later take in broadcasting. He also shares how he first got his start in television and the experiences that led him into the KHON2 sports department, where he built lasting relationships with colleagues and mentors throughout his career. Fans will also hear stories behind the popular “Go Johnny Go” segments, where Veneri immersed himself in a variety of sports and community activities. The feature became a fan favorite thanks to his energetic personality and willingness to connect with people across Hawaiʻi. The interview also touches on Veneri’s transition from the KHON2 sports department into station marketing before eventually becoming a lifestyle television host on Living808 and Sam Choy’s In The Kitchen. Veneri also opens up about the impact legendary Hawaiʻi broadcasters and mentors had on his life, including the late Jim Leahey, Bobby Curran and Robert Kekaula. He says those relationships continue to inspire him to support and mentor others the same way they helped guide him throughout his career.
