SUPERINTENSIVO IN EQUILIBRIO – UNA STORIA DI RIGENERAZIONE IN PROVINCIA DI FOGGIA

SUPERINTENSIVE IN BALANCE – A STORY OF REGENERATION IN THE PROVINCE OF FOGGIA We are in a super-intensive olive grove with a bushy wall, in the heart of the province of Foggia. A few years ago, the system was messy, poorly set up, with poorly functional and unbalanced plants. We then decided to intervene with a reform pruning, and today, after three growing seasons, we can say that the change is evident: the plants are in balance, well-structured, productive and easily manageable. The work began with the selection of a basic trunk 60–70 cm high, on which new branches developed, guided thanks to targeted “ediging” and “topping” interventions. The objective was clear: to contain the rigid skeleton of the plant within 50–60 cm of width, while leaving the external, flexible branches to adapt without problems to the passage of the straddler. Today, management is minimal: just a few “calming” prunings and very few manual interventions. Any breakages during harvesting do not represent a limit, but an opportunity for targeted cutting interventions. All this is accompanied by rational soil management, without tillage, with active turf and an efficient irrigation system, based on a double drip line. The result is a stable, healthy and long-lived root system, which also opens up the possibility, in the future, of completely renewing the aerial part simply by selecting the suckers emitted by the stump. Without replanting, without losing the existing root heritage. In short, this olive grove demonstrates that even in super-intensive, if you work with attention and agronomic vision, it is possible to obtain a productive, regenerable and sustainable system, where the balance between foliage, root and soil becomes the real strength.
