Lesson 24 Why is the AC cooling weakly? Permanent Run Capacitors

Lesson Title: Permanent Run Capacitors — The Secret Helper In this lesson, we explore the crucial role of permanent run capacitors in air conditioning systems. Many technicians underestimate how a drop in capacitance directly affects cooling power, but the impact is significant from both a physical and engineering perspective. The Science of Phase Shifting: In single-phase systems, a rotating magnetic field does not exist naturally; it must be created artificially. The capacitor provides the necessary 90-degree phase shift to the auxiliary winding, turning the compressor motor. This PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) system remains active during both start-up and operation. The Cost of Capacity Loss: As capacitors undergo chemical and physical changes over time, they lose capacity. This shift causes the electrical angle to misalign, weakening the magnetic field, forcing the compressor to struggle, and significantly increasing electricity consumption. The Danger of Incorrect Sizing: Using a higher-than-specified capacity (e.g., 60 µF instead of 50 µF) is not "better"; it creates excess current that will "cook" the start winding. Conversely, low capacity causes the run winding to overheat. Both scenarios result in a sharp decline in the AC unit's Coefficient of Performance (COP). Safety First: Technicians must always discharge capacitors using a high-resistance resistor before measuring. Short-circuiting them with a screwdriver is dangerous and damages both the capacitor layers and the tool tip. Professional Standards: Always follow the "Service Manual" or the "Wiring Diagram" on the outdoor unit. Do not guess the capacity. If in doubt, look up the original specifications for the specific model.
