Some History Note: The British Grand Prix was formerly known as the London Grand Prix, an annual Athletics (Track & Field) event held annually in London, England. It was one of five IAAF Super Grand Prix events, now it is part of the Diamond League. The event was held at London Stadium (London Olympic Stadium) in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In 2021 its name was changed to British Grand Prix and moved to Gateshead International Stadium. World Athletics (name used since October 2019) was formerly known as IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations). End of Some History Note. Some Geography/Info Note: The town of Gateshead is located in the North East of England in the Ceremonial County of Tyne, and Wear on the southern shore of the Tyne River. Gateshead is linked to the City of Newcastle by seven bridges. From the shore of the Tyne River the elevation rises to 70 meters (230 feet) to the Center of the Town to its highest elevation at Sheriff Hill of 160 meters (525 feet). End of Some Geography/Info Note. The Women’s Long Jump event kicked off at 19:36 (local time) on July 13, 2021, at Gateshead International Stadium. On that day the Temperature range was between 55°F - 68°F (13°C - 20°C). According to Diamond League Official Records, the wind speed varied between -1.9 m/s to +1.4 m/s during the Women’s Long Jump event. Gateshead International Stadium is located at Sea Level, along the shore of the Tyne River. Side Note: a negative wind speed means the athletes faced a headwind. A positive wind speed means the athletes had a tailwind. End Side Note. The Tokyo Olympics were just ten days away at the time of the British Grand Prix, thus, the list of athletes competing in the Games had already been determined as the Tokyo Olympics Qualifying Period had ended on June 29, 2021. The Olympics Qualifying Standard for the Women’s Long Jump is 6.82 m. The event featured nine athletes; seven of them were Olympic-Bound: Khaddi Sagnia (Sweden), Heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Great Britain), Abigail Irozuru (Great Britain), Jazmin Sawyers (Great Britain), Fátima Diame (Spain), Malaika Mihambo (Germany), Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (Ukraine). The remaining two athletes did not participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games; their World Ranking in the Women’s Long Jump by World Athletics on July 13, 2021, was the following: Former University of Kentucky Wildcat Sha’keela Saunders (USA), Ranked Number 17. Former University of Arkansas Razorback Taliyah Brooks (USA), Ranked Number 46. How it Unfolded: In the Diamond League Long Jump Competition Format, athletes compete in 5 Preliminary Rounds to Qualify for the Final 3. Final 3 Qualifying: Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (Ukraine), qualified as 1st Placed with a leap of 6.77m (wind velocity = -0.1 m/s), her fifth jump (Round 5). Fátima Diame (Spain), qualified as 2nd Placed with a leap of 6.67m (wind velocity = -0.7 m/s), her second jump (Round 2). Malaika Mihambo (Germany), qualified as 3rd Placed with a leap of 6.62m (wind velocity = +0.7 m/s), her fourth jump (Round 4). At this point, the athletes in the Final 3 get their best mark from any of the 5 Preliminary Rounds put on hold, until the final positions get settled in the Final 3 Round. So, whoever wins the Final 3 Round wins the Competition. It is a Winner Takes All Format. Final 3 Results: 1. Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (Ukraine), 6.67m (wind velocity = +0.3 m/s) 2. Malaika Mihambo (Germany), 6.62m (wind velocity = -0.1 m/s) 3. Fátima Diame (Spain), 6.45m (wind velocity = -0.5 m/s) So, based on the Final 3 Results the athletes get their positions listed on the Final Results Board. As you can see from the tables above for Bekh-Romanchuk (Ukraine) and Mihambo (Germany) their marks on the Final 3 were their best marks of the Competition, so, those are the marks that get listed for them on the Final Results Board. For Diame (Spain) she got her best mark on her second jump (Round 2) of the Competition, so, that is the mark that is listed for her on the Final Results Board.
