Cell phone casings, beverage cans, yogurt lids, or car bodies: we encounter aluminum daily. The metal is exceptionally lightweight, doesn't rust, and can be as hard as steel. Northern Germany plays a crucial role in its production. Germany's only plant that extracts aluminum oxide from tropical bauxite is located in Stade, Lower Saxony. This fine white powder is later used to produce metallic aluminum. Aluminum production is very energy- and resource-intensive.
