On the Bone Road, the rule is older than the road's name: you do not carry a debt to the dead. The dead are owed things — wages never paid, graves never marked, the names that were struck from the records so the living could keep what was never theirs — and what the dead cannot collect, the road collects for them. It sends a rider. The rider carries an iron rod, and every name he has ever been sent for is cut into it. Crale spent nine years as the clerk who unwrote the dead for a bribe. Then he began to hear a horse on the road at night, walking toward him, and he ran. He hid far to the north, called himself a humble schoolmaster, and never understood that the small village he chose to disappear into sat squarely on the one road in the world built to collect his exact debt.
