NU COOL 4 | HEDKANDI RETURN TO THE CLASSICS

Welcome to the latest addition to the Hed Kandi Nu Cool series. Just over a year ago we were discussing how successful the Nu Cool series had been on our parent label jazztm records. It was felt that to take the series further a new label should be set up to capitalise on the success of this type of compilation. It is here that most companies would talk about brainstorming sessions, design meetings and large amounts of money on research- the birth of our new label was a lot easier than that. Head Candy was a name I'd had rattling around in my head for a few years. It was a mixture of the American tems Eye Candy & Ear Candy, The idea being our brand would appeal to a collection of senses. A bit of creative tweaking later and we were left with Hed Kandi. The logo was designed by an old clubbing acquaintance and the front cover artwork just had to be supplied by Jason Brooks. The magnetic packaging first appeared on a BBE Disco album and we liked it so much we "borrowed" it (thanks Pete). So during the months of June and July we unleashed Nu Cool 3 and Serve Chilled and the rest is not so much history as the beginning of an ever-increasing snowball and it's a big thanks to everyone who has supported us so far ! You now have the fourth in the Nu Cool series and we think it’s the best yet. The tracklisting is once again split into a housier main room selection on CD1 and a very eclectic backroom mix on CD2. CD1 plays host to some superbly crafted US style garage and there are no finer exponents than the Masters At Work who have made it onto every nu cool compilation as artists or remixers, Latin Lover features the exceptional vocals of Stephanie Millşs and the usual MAW attention to detail. Another superb hard to find track comes courtesy of Eric Kupper's label Hysteria, "Learn To Give" features Arnold Jarvis a man who defined the early house sound with "Take Some Time Out" over 10 years ago. We were also lucky enough to be able to include the new Moloko track "The Time ls Now" which is shaping up to be another summer monster. As always the final track is a Hed Kandi classic De Lacy's "Hideaway" gains it's status from many an epic night out in the mid 90's. It is specially dedicated to a Mr Henderson who always made it to the dancefloor before we'd even got the first drink in. CD2 features a mix of tracks that start out fairly reserved and completely loseit towards the end. just like a good night out! The first three artists provide cooler, soulful material with the Journeyman DJ track and its use of the classic Stretch track “Why Did You Do It” being a particular favorite. After that it all gets a touch funkier and we’re particulary happy to have finally got our hands on Tribute To Fela by MAW. It’s a true classic and one we’ve been chasing since Nu Coll 3, so a big thanks to all at MAW! The final third of CD 2 is where it al goes a bit over the top kicking off with a superb piece of retro styled funk from Kenny Dope and promises great things from his forthcoming album. Add in a classic rework of “The Message” the lunacy of Fatboy Slim remixing Groove Armada and the classic Sunshine of Your Love and you have the perfect Hed Kandi blend. Enjoy!
