Who Was Kitagawa Utamaro?
In this Japanese artist video, we will learn about the most famous artist of beautiful women pictures, or "bijin-ga", Kitagawa Utamaro. Utamaro set the bar for depictions of women from all strata of Japanese culture. The elegant economy of his linework, his ability to reveal the personality and emotions of his subjects, and his sense of compostion, made him the successor to Suzuki Harunobu and Torii Kiyonaga in the bijin-ga genre. In this video we'll explore some of his famous print series, including prints of the courtesans that worked in the pleasure district, or "Yoshiwara".
