Founded in 1859, Virginia City's population grew overnight with the discovery of the Comstock Lode, named after Henry T. P. Comstock which is a lode of silver ore under the eastern slope of Mount Davidson. Today, the town's economy is now based on tourism with many residents who live there own and work at the shops.
