Devotion to the Five Wounds of Christ was traditionally initiated by Saint Francis of Assisi, who received these stigmata from the Lord on his own body while in a state of ecstasy. The Five Wounds of Jesus Christ (or plagues in archaic versions) is a devotional expression referring to the five wounds Jesus received during his crucifixion. While alive, he suffered the piercings in both hands and feet from the nails that fastened him to the cross; and after his death, to ensure his passing, he received a wound in his right side, inflicted by a lance that pierced his chest. The Chaplet of the Holy Wounds of Christ, also known as the Rosary of the Blood of Christ, is a devotion that leads us to meditate on the Holy Wounds of the body of the Lord Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. A common rosary is used; ideally, it should be prayed in front of a crucifix that inspires more devotion when contemplating each wound, and with faith because without faith it is impossible to please God.
