Chiltern's Mark 3 'Silver Sets' are being retired soon! | A history of the Chiltern Railways Mk3s

In today's video, I look at a brief history of the mk3 carriages in passenger operations. These carriages rose to prominance with the InterCity 125 'HST' sets they ran in but numbers have dwindled since their peak in the 70s and 80s due to unreliability, maintenance costs and accessibility concerns. As of February 2026 only three operators operate the mk3s - GWR, Scotrail and Chiltern Railways. Chiltern are the last daily Mk3 operator, with GWR only operating theirs on sleeper services. Today I look at a brief history of these iconic train carriages, their resurgance with Chiltern Railways and their withdrawal. The Chiltern 'Silver Sets', as they are dubbed, are being withdrawn in mid-late March 2026, being replaced by the much newer Mk5a trains - video here:    • Chiltern's NEW Mk5a trains will TRANSFORM ...   Thanks for watching, you can support me below if you enjoyed: Patreon:   / vanmanyo   YouTube membership:    / @vanmanyo   All your support is hugely appreciated, thank you.
